“I don’t have any time.”
“I need two of me.”
“I wish I had more time.”
“I don’t have enough time.”
Most people constantly say these things to themselves, but few do anything about it.
The interesting thing is that we all have the same amount of time in a single day. 24 hours. That’s right, we all have exactly the same amount of time per day. It’s how you choose to use it that separates you from others.
If you want to figure out how to make better use of your time, here are six big tips:
1. Get Two of You
Everyone always says they wish that they had two of themselves. But few do anything about it. I know that was a block for me. I thought it would be too much work or too much effort to train someone. But that is just an excuse, not a solution. The solution, or a possible solution, is actually doing it and seeing for yourself if it works for you.
2. Replace Yourself with Technology
It’s becoming a joke that everyone is being replaced by technology, but it’s true. There are probably many areas of your business that in which you can replace yourself with technology.
Social media is a good place to start. With tools like Hootsuite, IFTTT and others, it’s very easy to replace yourself on many day to day social media tasks. You can literally automate just about any repetitive social media task with a tool such as IFTTT.
3. Read Faster with Apps or by Thin Slicing
Many people complain that they don’t have enough time to read. The problem could be that you’re trying to read the entire book in a short period of time and it feels like an overwhelming task.
Instead of trying to cram in an entire book in an hour, why don’t you try a technique called thin slicing? Thin slicing basically means that you look at the table of contents, pick a chapter that interests you and read only that chapter or section instead of the entire book.
The other option is to get an app called Blinkist that simplifies books down to around 10 pages. Think of this like super high-level cliffsnotes on a book. In fact, I have found the Blinks better than the books themselves in some cases because it made the book so laser focused and actionable.
While these first few options may not be possible for everyone because of the cost, the below tips cost nothing.
4. Create More Time
It sounds impossible, but it’s really not. If you don’t have money to spend, you can still gain more time by getting more people to commit their time to your business, project or cause. The secret is to attract and motivate other people to help you.
In just about every successful business I have ever run, I had someone as equally as motivated as I was to help me–in some capacity–build that business. If you aren’t building businesses yet, but you need help maybe you have a significant other or a friend that you could motivate to help you with your project.
5. Avoid Time Vampires
I would describe time vampires as people that want to use and abuse your time. I’m not referring to people that you could genuinely help and are appreciative of it. I’m referring to people that will literally take advantage of every second you give them in a disrespectful kind of way, without ever thinking about reciprocating.
I’m all for helping genuinely respectful people who need it, who can’t reciprocate, so don’t get me wrong. I’m all for helping people that are grateful, but there are some people that specifically target “nice people,” or influencers, and try to get them to do all kinds of favors and free work.
6. Don’t Work for Free
Don’t become someone that works for free, or you can say bye-bye to your precious time. I have literally 10-20 people on any given day ask me to do free work for them. As a general principle, I don’t do it, except in extremely rare circumstances that total less than 5 percent of the time.
If you become someone that does free work, people will capitalize and take advantage of it. It’s unfortunate and a sad reality, but people will start demanding more and more and offer nothing in return. The worst is when you get strung along with a big payday eventually, and often times those people are blowing hot air.
By following these time saving and time generating techniques, you will find yourself with time again. And next time you find yourself saying you don’t have time, check back to this article for a nice reminder of how to make more of it.
